Certified Electronics Technician Program


Test available:

Associate-level CET Exam and Journeyman-level CET Exams

$60 for Associate exam, $75 for each Journeyman exam

Eligibility:

Associate-level

Any technician or student in electronics may take the associate level exam. The exam is the basic electronics portion of the full credit CET exam and must be passed with a score of 75% or better. This multiple-choice test covers basic electronics, math, DC and AC circuits, transistors and troubleshooting. A successful associate CET will receive a wall certificate valid for four years (extendable for 2 years) and is eligible to join ISCET, the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians.  Available in Spanish.

Journeyman-level

To take one of the Journeyman Specialty exams you must have passed the Associate-level CET exam within the last four years or with ISCET qualified exceptions.  Four years total electronics education/electronics industry experience is also required for certification.  You may take the Journeyman level exams before you have the requisite experience, but you will not be issued your Journeyman-level certification until the experience requirement is satisfied.

Journeyman Specialties

Computer:
This test covers the operation of computer systems with greatest emphasis on the hardware. Areas covered include digital fundamentals, hardware fundamentals, communication basics, memory, auxiliary storage, computer input/output, microcomputer operating systems, basic networking, and troubleshooting/upgrading. The technician should have some knowledge of software and programming, and be able to explain troubleshooting procedures.  A score of 75% or better is required to pass. 

Radar:
General knowledge of both pulse radar and continuous wave radar operation is necessary for taking this Journeyman option. The following are all areas with which everyone in this field of endeavor should be familiar: Waveguides, Microwave Devices; Resonant Cavities and Magnetrons, Basic Radar Principles, Doppler Radar Principles, Phased Array Radars, Pulse Compression Radars, Over-The-Horizon Radars and Bistatic Radars.    A score of 75% or better is required to pass.

Industrial:
The industrial exam covers such items as:  The characteristics and applications of industrial electronics components, the operation of devices such as triacs, SCRs, diacs, and Shockley diodes.  Also covered are various kinds of transducers, operation of transistors and op-amps, single-phase and three-phase control systems, motors, single-phase and three-phase control systems, motors, PLCs and industrial electronics safety and basic knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatic systems.    A score of 75% or better is required to pass.  Available in Spanish.

Communications:
This test covers 2-way transceivers and the servicing of these types of equipment. Included subjects are basic communications circuits and components, communications transmitters, and communications receivers.  A score of 75% or better is required to pass.

Consumer:
Subjects covered in this option include digital and linear circuits in consumer electronics, servicing problems on televisions and VCRs, use of test equipment, and troubleshooting consumer products.  A score of 75% or better is required to pass.  Available in Spanish.

Audio:
Turntables, tape, disc, and radio are all covered in the Audio option.  The exam consists of both digital and analog sections, amplifiers and sound quality, and system set-up, speaker installation, and troubleshooting audio systems.  A score of 75% or better is required to pass.

Video:
The technicians need to know NTSC standards, video basics, test signals, and the operations of both electronics and mechanical systems in video recorders.  Also covered are 8mm video, camcorders, cameras and monitors, and the microprocessors used in video operations.  A score of 75% or better is required to pass.

Biomedical:
Electrical safety and accuracy of calibration for electromedical instruments, plus the need for prompt in-house electronic service, are the priorities in this option. The applicant is expected to demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts and vocabulary of instruments, differential amplifier and operational amplifier applications.  A score of 75% or better is required to pass.
